A DIY Halloween Village

It’s the time of year for spooky ghosts, creepy monsters and creative DIYs. The popularity of computerized cutters prompted Studio 300 to add the Silhouette Cameo 3. This cutter can handle card stock, chipboard, fabric and more. Feeling inspired by the season — and sheets of cute card stock — we created a Halloween village. It includes one large mansion, a few little houses, card stock trees, and fences. We also used our 3D printer to add cute pumpkins and scary monsters.

Using the Silhouette, the mansion came from a free project found at Paper Glitter Glue and converted using Adobe Illustrator. If you want to make your own, watch our video with all the steps. Studio 300 has the project files for the houses if you want to cut your own, too. And you can see the finished project in the Studio 300 display case now through Halloween.

Parade success

We received this generous note from the Bolingbrook Garden Club and wanted to share it:

“Thanks to the resources at the Maker Lab inside Studio 300, the Bolingbrook Garden Club won the Mayor’s trophy at the September 8, 2019 Pathways Parade. We were able to make custom T-shirts, print pictures used in our display, and craft vinyl lettering for the float. The Garden Club also used Studio 300 meeting rooms for our planning sessions.”

Congratulations to the club’s members on winning their trophy this year and thanks for sharing their winning strategy with us all.

2019 Filmmaking Camps

Once again this Summer our Tween and Teen patrons learned about filmmaking during hands-on programs in Studio 300. The Tween group focused on making a short film trailer based upon popular games. They also designed a poster to go along with their imaginative film. The Teens also made trailers. For a second project, they conceived and produced a short film and made posters, too. Enjoy these videos made by our young Fountaindale community members.

DIY Felt Succulent

IMG_20190403_201719

During April’s Adult Makers DIY program, our patrons made felt succulents. By popular demand, here are the project’s instructions.

Required Supplies

  • Felt Squares (6” x 6” pieces work great)
  • Hot Glue Gun with Glue
  • Pastel Chalks (Optional)
  • Template

Step 1. Using the template (Download Succulent Template here) cut out the pieces of felt. When you print the template make sure you choose actual size instead of fit for print or your pieces will be very large. You should have 3 sizes of petals. Note: If you wish to use chalk pastels color the felt before gluing.

Step 2. Take one of the smallest petals and place a bead of hot glue near the bottom. Pinch it together until the glue cools. Use a low temp glue gun for the best results (and safety!). Starting with the smallest petals build up your succulent and keep petals evenly spaced. When you run out of the smallest petals go to the medium petals. Continue building up your succulent. Finally use the larger petals and finish the last layers.

Your finished design can be used in many different ways. For example, we finished our project by gluing them into mini clay pots.

Open Mic Success

On Tuesday, April 9, Studio 300 hosted our first Open Mic Showcase Night. Several brave performers shared their music and poetry during the evening to rave reviews from a supportive and enthusiastic audience.

Our next Open Mic Showcase Night is May 14 in Meeting Room B starting at 7 p.m. If you are interested in performing your acoustic music, poetry, dance, artwork, photography and even short films, you get up to seven minutes, and signup is first come, first served. And, of course, if you wish to support our local artists, you can join the audience, too. At this time, the program is for ages 18 and older only.

Record an Album in a Month

Each winter musical artists from around the world take on the RPM challenge (Record Production Month) and record a full album of music in one month. And if that challenge alone isn’t hard enough, they do it in February—the shortest month of the year.

The contest doesn’t require you to write new songs (but it’s highly encouraged), but to win, you need to record ten tracks or 35 minutes of music.

Get started at the official RPM website, where you can sign up for your own dedicated artist page, listen to prior contributions, encourage other participates, and get feedback on your music. And on February 1st, it’s time to hit that big red record button.

Of course, Studio 300 is here to help with gear, recording spaces, and encouragement. We’ll get you rolling in no time.

When it’s all over, we’ll be hosting a listening party on March 5 at 7 p.m. Bring in your tracks and celebrate!
